Cornwall Day 5 Tin Mines and Kingfishers!

Seeing yesterday's passage of large Shears from the Eden Project, we decided to start with another crack at Pendeen today, to be honest with no wind and no other birders present on our arrival, I wasn't confident, a few Manxies went through but not as many as on our last visit, another couple of birders turned up and positioned themselves  higher up nearer the Lighthouse, they picked up few Cory's at very long range, I joined them an eventually picked one up, I was following a group of Gannets in my scope and it went passed the other way!! Miles out and had I been on my own I don't think I'd of called it!!

Not quite as large as those in the Eden Project

Margie had been eyeing up the mines and with the Sea-watching slowing even more, we decided to drive around and have a look, think I took a wrong turn somewhere because we ended up in Boscaswell but with the help of a friendly local we found our way down to the mines, it is an industrial landscape but seems to fit in with the surroundings!! The pictures below by Margie

While Margie was wandering about learning shizz, reading boards etc, I was looking for birds, obvs!!😁 Flyovers of both Sparrowhawk and Kestrel, couple of Wheatears, Raven, Stonechats, Pipits and a few Linnets and Goldfinches!

After a couple of hours, we decided to head off to the Hayle Estuary to have a crack at the oft reported Osprey, we followed the coast road, very scenic although a couple of interesting encounters with buses on the narrow bits enlivened proceedings 😱. We stopped briefly at another tin mine which had horses!!

We arrived at RSPB Hayle Estuary, the mud in front of the hide held a single Redshank, a Kingfisher flew through and perched  annoyingly just about in sight, although I nearly dislocated my back to get the picture!

Kingfisher

There were several perches right in front of the hide, but no obviously it wouldn't sit on them!

We relocated to the Carnsew Pool, no sign of the Osprey, 3 Wheatears were running about, several Little Egrets were fishing the edges as the tide rushed in, distantly we could see Waders. Curlew and Oystercatchers mainly. A couple of Little Grebes and Cormorants were fishing in the swirling waters.

As we were leaving, another Kingfisher flew in and perched on a rope, a little better than the last one!!

This seemed a very nice place and we barely scratched the surface, typically the Osprey was reported 10 minutes after we left!!😢😂 The Birding Gods must be building up to something!!!!
