Windmills to the Beacon and Back!

Having completed 11000 steps around Belle Tout on Saturday. We decided not to have a rest like sensible people and did even more on Sunday. The walk from the Jack & Jill Windmills to the Ditchling Beacon is fairly flat and Margie and I made it in fairly good time, the weather was a bit gloomier than Saturday and the Birds a bit further away, but the views all around are fairly magnificent! Starting with the Carpark!

The view across the Weald by Margie

As we walked up to the South Downs Way, a Greenfinch was calling and Skylarks were Singing!

Greenfinch

The walk to the Beacon was a bit quiet. Saw a Bullfinch, lots of Linnets, a Buzzard, a Red Kite, sadly didn't come as close as the ones at Beachy, a bright male Wheatear the highlight, but it disappeared over the ridge in the field it was in never to be seen again! A single Yellowhammer and a Stonechat were about the best of it, though a couple of Meadow Pipits were of interest!

Common Buzzard

Even the blooming sheep are in Tractor Boys colours😂

My stonking picture of the male Wheatear😏😂 Not quite my usual standard!!

Shame the Sun didn't come out

Yellowhammer, most of the birds were halfway down the steep escarpment. I could of gone down to get a bit closer, but I didn't fancy trying to get back up again😱!

Margie carried on with the views

Though she made time for a Cowslip

Certainly not going down there

The Amex

We reached the Beacon the weather was improving. The number of people was increasing as well😢! Serves us right for the late start. However bird of the day didn't let that affect it!! A Yellowhammer gave stunning views, bursting in to song at regular intervals. Strangely it was only singing the "a little bit of bread" part of it's song forgoing the follow up "and no cheese" conclusion!

The Beacon Pond by Margie, saw Corn Buntings here a couple of months ago but no sightings or singing today😢

The Yellowhammer was so tame even Margie got a pic of it!!😁

The return journey was largely uneventful, though I did manage to hear a Corn Bunting halfway back but despite mucho scanning I couldn't find the blighter😢!
