Spring is Springing

After yesterday's efforts I was surprised to find us up reasonably early and ready for a walk! A bit different today heading down Cuckfield Road through the little wood adjacent to Fairfield Recreation Ground out onto Chalkers Lane next to the College then across the fields to Danworth Lane before re-crossing Cuckfield Road following the Herring Stream to  Langton Lane then home via the lane, Bit of a Mudfest to be honest the first part was very muddy though things improved as we got further out of the village.

The Blackcap was in the Garden again and were multiple signs of spring in the garden with Snowdrops, Crocus and singing Sparrows, although calling it singing is generous, chirping maybe better!!

The small wood next to the rec had 2 Drumming Great Spotted Woodpeckers but neither wanted to pose for pics, Seemed a lot of Great Tits about today or perhaps just more noticeable as they were singing more. A brutal looking  Herring Gull flew through, I'm thinking a third winter bird perhaps they always look mean!  Things picked up as we headed across the fields between Chalkers and Danworth Lanes with a big flock of Fieldfare and Redwings, a flyover Heron and a Couple of calling Green Woodpeckers which we didn't see.

The flock of Redwings increased in size as we crossed the fields between Danworth Lane and Cuckfield Road ,a smart looking singing Starling and the briefest view of a Treecreeper here as well.

Starling, they are starting to look pretty smart around now

Redwing, surprisingly confiding

We crossed the Cuckfield Road following the Herring Stream, everything along here was elusive, though we saw Long-tailed Tits, Goldfinch, lots more Redwings and a couple of Song Thrush we didn't get pics of any of them!!

We came out onto Langton Lane, lots of birds singing including 2 male Chaffinches the first I've seen on my walks this year, several Blackbirds, Dunnocks, Robins, Song Thrushes holding forth as well and Skylarks could be heard from many of the surrounding fields. Luckily I had remembered my Bins today so when a small bird flew into a distant tree I was able to identify it as a Yellowhammer.

The Dungheap for once failed to produce, though the oak at the entrance to the lane opposite had a bright Yellowhammer singing it's heart out, one of my favourite sights and sounds of the spring. There was one here last year so hopefully will set up a territory which could allow some good photo-ops in the future!

A little further on, I was an investigating a hedge as I thought i'd heard a Bullfinch call when a Goldcrest popped into view, these little buggers are quite hard to get pictures of and I've never had much luck with them, but this one actually sat still for a few seconds, possibly my best ever pics of one below!!

That was about that a House Sparrow appeared and had a bit of a chirp at us but nothing else of note was seen, nearly lost a boot in the mud on the path between Langton Lane and Sunleigh but made it home safely, was very nice to hear all the birdsong today a real spring feeling in the air, was really warm considering how cold it was last week and we are still in February, by the time we got home, I'd taken me hat off, me gloves off, loosened me scarf and undone me coat, another mile or two and I could of ended up naked and nobody wants to see that!!!๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
