Scotland 2025 Day 11 King of the Mountain! And Queen!

12/05/2025

Today we decided to have a crack at  Old Man of Storr, regular readers will remember our heroic conquest of Cairngorm with no Sherpas or pack animals. We weren't actually going to go up, with Margie still recovering from her worktop surfing, but a bloke in the car park reckoned it was easy and people went up in sandals! This turned out to be optimistic although in his defence we did see a woman going up in Sandals but I didn't fancy her chances. The Old Man of Storr is all about the views, which are pretty magnificent, on the bird front, it was Willow Warblers, Stonechats and  Wrens on the way up, a couple of Ring Ouzels at the top and a couple of Wheatears on the way down!

Despite glorious blue skies all around, this one island remained under this cloud all day

Willow Warbler

Stonechat

Possibly the most magnificent sheep in the world!

Wren

Ring Ouzel, poor pic, we had quite good views but every time they landed I was doing some mountaineering move, trans-versing or some such so missed the shot!

Having a breather before the assault on the summit

The burning Sun

At the top, still looking amazingly suave and sophisticated! In reality it was a magnificent effort by Margie who worked through the pain with grim determination to get to the top!

We met this random power couple, probably interweb influencers, think they jogged up!

Having made it back down, we had a drive around the top of the island, got to be said there were more potholes than road !  Memorable encounters with a Willow Warbler and some Sandmartins probably the highlight!

Wheatear, didn't hang around for my usual 100 pics!

Willow Warbler, the soundtrack of the holiday, these were  probably the best pics I got all fortnight, in a bush at eye level from the car!

Sandmartins, male on the left!

That was about that for the day to be honest we was knackered after our mountaineering heroics,so  it was home for a well deserved early night!
