View from the Back Door

Today I decided to have a rest!! However whilst lounging on the sofa, having breakfasted on toast and Waitrose's awesome Organic thick cut Marmalade a Greenfinch landed on the feeders, now our feeders later have tended to be dominated by Sparrows, Starlings with the odd raid by a pair of Blue Tits, although things have pick up lately with a Siskin a couple of weeks ago and a Goldfinch in the week!! So quick as a flash the camera was set up and I managed a couple of shots, I decided to sit at the open door and see what else turned up!!

The Greenfinch, typically sat behind a twig so sharpness suffered a little!

Greenfinch still not sharpe๐Ÿ˜ข

Typically the Greenfinch buggered off after a couple of minutes, but the entertainment continued with the Garden Regulars and even a Herring Gull dropped in to mop up the old Fatballs I'd emptied on to the grass. (they'd been ignored by most of the birds despite being the expensive RSPB ones so I replaced them with the ones I won from Upcountry, which are much more popular) Margie was concerned about rats, which is why we only feed in feeders, but the Starlings, Pigeons. Jackdaws and the Herring Gull hoovered them up in under an hour!!
My watch also confirmed having a source of water in the garden is vitally important with regular visits to our small pond both to drink and bathe by pretty much all the visitors, so despite the Frog failing to perform, we are still sadly lacking in Frogspawn, the birds at least are benefitting from our efforts!!
A few pics below of the regulars with notes on the pics!

Starling, very fond of Mealworms and Fatballs noisy buggers nest in our roof but can't help like em!!

Not sure of the species but a rare sight at the moment!

Female House Sparrow, not a big fan of Feeder shots but liked the pose on this one

Female House Sparrow in a more natural pose, loads in Hurst which is excellent

Male House Sparrow in our Hawthorn we planted it as a small (2ft) Twig a few years ago has now grown to Sparrow Central, where they meet to Gossip, Fight, Shag, Preen and Chill, putting a large bush in your garden gives the birds cover to get on with their lives! It's like Emmerdale on steroids some days!!

Now we know why we are always having to refill it!!

Having a drink

Nice pose, with the ground drying up fast and little rain in the forecast I fear they will struggle to find the worms they need this year!

Blue Tit in the pond, told you it was popular!

Blue Tit

And again

Well they are cute

Note if you are going to dig a pond and want to take pictures of birds bathing in it, position it better than I did duh!!

Female Blackbird

Male House Sparrow again

Yes I know but there are a lot of em and they are quite photogenic!!

Herring Gull, looking washed out in the harsh sunlight!

Herring Gull, this is the first one i've seen actually land in the Garden which is a little enclosed, the lure of the fat ball bonanza overcome it's fear!!

Woodpigeon nearly snapping a branch of our Rowan, the fat so n so! The Rowan another success story planted as a 2ft whip now 20 ft and growing, produces quite a few berries in the autumn, which I'm hoping will be there when the next Waxwing irruption occurs although the Blackbirds have usually eaten em all by the end of September so not much hope๐Ÿ˜ข

A couple of Collared Doves appeared, I christened them Margie and Paul, as they are inseparable and very much in love๐Ÿ’˜๐Ÿ’“๐Ÿ’• and also she seemed to ignore everything he said!! (Margie said something about it being the other way round, least I think that's what she said I wasn't really listening........๐Ÿ˜‚)

Collared Dove

Collared Dove, look at those blood red eyes!!!

Right after that wash n brush up I'm ready for my solo!!

The colours on a Starling at this time of year in the right light are pretty stunning!!

It's not just Birds in the Garden the many flowers in the "lawn" and the pink flowers of some kind of Heather that we have in a corner attracted a few insects as well, a couple of Blue Butterflies which didn't settle long enough for me to get a pic, a massive Bee and several Hoverflies seen as well a few pics below

Bee

Impressed myself to even get this in the view finder!!

One of our plants nicely lit

Hoverfly? plenty of Daisies in the Lawn already

Our new Bird Cherry (Prunus Padus) tree that we planted to replace that hacked down by the vandals at BT Open Reach, happy that it's already producing flowers thought it would be at least a year so happy days!!

Hoverfly on Fence

Hoverfly in flight, not to brag but it's almost in focus๐Ÿ˜ƒ

This may also be a Hoverfly or a Bee on the pink heather flowers

Another posy insect

The Moon from the Garden
So quite a nice couple of hours, amazing how busy the garden is when you sit and watch properly for a few hours, from a wildlife point of view they need cover, food and water, provide that, whether through planting or feeders or like us a mixture of both and you will be surprised how much you can attract to your garden no matter how small it is!!!

In between stakeouts I also cooked a cake, a delicious Organic Fruit Cake with Black Treacle and Dark Muscovado Sugar!!
And despite what Margie implied, 2 slices wasn't enough for anyone!!!๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜‚ especially not me!!

7ish at the Dung Heap

The title of this was supposed to be Sunrise at the Dung Heap!! Failed to get out of bed!!๐Ÿ˜€ Anyway better late than never๐Ÿ˜ With very little being reported anywhere else I decided to stay local and see if I could find anything awesome near home, spoiler alert I couldn't!! In fact apart from a few Chiffchaffs calling didn't see anything migratory at all, however did have a few nice encounters with the local residents so, every cloud n all that!!

Wasn't much about as I crossed the fields from our road to Langton Lane, on the lane nice to glimpse a couple of Bullfinch, but they weren't interested in posing for pics๐Ÿ˜ข Couple of Robins and a small party of Great Tits seen as well

Robin

Arrival at the Dung Heap was slightly underwhelming a couple of Blackbirds and Song Thrush rooting about, the usual Dunnocks but not the Wheatear/Ouzelfest I'd been hoping for, eventually I found a pair of Yellowhammer but they stayed distant, not even any Wagtails which was a surprise!

Blackbird

Herring Gull always look nice against a blue sky

Song Thrush plenty of these seen today, all the big hedges seemed to have a couple of these and a couple of Blackbirds patrolling the edge

Record shot of Yellowhammer on Dung Heap (read on better pics of Yellowhammer Imminent)

Dunnock showing what it thought of proceedings so far!!

So I needed a sign

Blackbird giving me a sign!!

Seemed to convenient so I went the other way!!๐Ÿ˜ฒ  Largely because I'd seen a Jay fly along the hedge, it did what Jays do IE skulk but eventually I got a couple of shots!

I decided that wide open spaces of the Turkey/Pheasant farm would be awash with Wheatear/Ouzel action, they weren't!! Couple of Pied Wags the only evidence of life, I went through the farm ,hit the stream and looped back to Langton Lane, as I was walking back down the lane, a bird flew over my shoulder and landed in the hedge about 5 yards in front of me! cracking male Yellowhammer, which posed well for a couple of minutes before relocating to a wire where it posed even better!! Bird of day!!
Cue too many pics of a Yellowhammer๐Ÿ˜‚

Fabulous encounter!! A little further on I watched a couple of Male House Sparrows cavorting around a small tree in an effort to impress a female, she didn't seem that impressed to be honest!!๐Ÿ’”

Showing a bit of interest

Male House Sparrow

Nah, not interested!

Goldfinch
I continued my wanderings, a footpath off the road sparked my interest, when the movement that caught my eye turned out to be a Green Woodpecker, it's rare to spot them before they spot ya, so I went full stealth mode, however terrain was difficult, another bird flew in from stage right and landed on a signpost, theme developing here!! The birds feeding on the ground disappeared around the corner of a conifer hedge, I crept along the edge reached the corner poked me head round, nada they'd buggered off ,meaning I'd spent 5 mins of my life in full stealth mode for nothing!! luckily at this point a couple of Greenfinch appeared and posed very nicely which cheered me up no end!!๐Ÿ˜€

The usual view!!

Saw quite a few Finches on my walk today, mostly Goldfinch, a few Greenfinch, a couple of Bullfinch and pleased to see a couple of Chaffinch as well though they were the least posy!

Chaffinch

Got back to the Dung Heap, much the same as before this time it was a Robin on the signpost!!

Robin, bad hair day!

Church, be honest you'd thought I'd forgotten didn't ya!!๐Ÿ˜€

I headed back down the lane, the thick hedges in the fields had plenty of the commoner birds in them, but getting pics was at a premium, another fairly frustrating encounter with some Bullfinch, although a couple of Goldies showed them how to pose. The Blackthorn bushes were full of blossom but could I get anything to pose in them? No obviously!!

Goldfinch in Lichen now if you could just move two bushes to the left and sit in the blossom?

No? fair enough, quite like these pics though with the light like it is!!

Bullfinch, will you please come a bit closer!!

Ok I will but in a way that completely winds you up ๐Ÿ˜‚

Blue Tit showing how it's done

Blue Tit

Bullfinch, now if you could just come forward into the blossom?

No don't think so!!

See Ya๐Ÿ˜‚

Sorry about that went a bit Jonny Morris there๐Ÿ˜ฒ Your old if you know who that is๐Ÿ˜ƒ So a nice walk in glorious sunshine and blue skies where, due to the change in temperature from blooming nippy to sweat ya nuts off, I gave Gypsy Rose Lee a run for her money in the taking off clothes stakes, although you will be glad to know I didn't end up naked!!! Plenty of birds about today, Lot's of singing Skylarks in appropriate habitat and the hedges had plenty of the common stuff but couldn't find anything unusual, migration seems to have passed Hurstpierpoint by so far!! Still there is always next time!!!!
